Abstract

883,123. Transfers; transferring designs. MEYERCORD CO. Feb. 2, 1960 [Feb. 9, 1959], No. 3650/60. Drawings to Specification. Class 100(2) A vitreous decalcomania having a vitreous design layer with a heat-releasable backing at one side thereof and a heat-activatable adhesive material at the opposite side thereof, whereby upon application of heat the adhesive material is activated for adhering the design layer to an article and the design layer is simultaneously released from the backing, is provided with a heat-release coating of high melt viscosity waxlike material interposed between the backing and the design layer, the coating comprising a normally solid mixture of polyethylene glycol compounds having an average molecular weight of from about 15,000 to about 20,000. The decalcomania comprises a backing consisting of a paper sheet, having a barrier layer coated thereon to make one side less porous, the heat-release layer, a clear resinous film, the vitreous design layer, and a thermoplastic adhesive layer. The barrier layer may be starch, casein, glue, alkali metal silicate, or water glass, with or without a filler such as talc or clay. The heat-release layer has a coating weight of 0À4-3À0 grams per 100 square inches, and comprises 25-50% by weight of normally solid polyethylene glycol compounds of average molecular weight 15,000-20,000, 70-40% of such compounds of molecular weight 3,000-8,000, and 5-10% of normally liquid polyethylene glycol compounds of molecular weight 200-600. The clear film is an unpigmented resinous film having the same organic vehicle as the body portion of the colour layers of the vitreous design layer, and may comprise ethyl cellulose lacquer, polymerized acrylic resin, polymethyl methacrylate resin, or ethylene glycol monobutyl ether, with chlorinated diphenyl as a plasticizer, in an aromatic petroleum hydrocarbon solvent. The design layer comprises vitrifiable ceramic colours in a flux, such as lead oxide, boric oxide, silicon dioxide, cadmium oxide, titanium dioxide, lithium oxide, or sodium oxide, and a flowable binder comprising lacquers containing a cellulose ester or ether, or acrylic resin, e.g. ethylcellulose, cellulose acetate, or nitrocellulose, in a solvent, e.g. ethylene glycol monobutyl ether, with a plasticizer, e.g. castor oil, dibutyl phthalate, or chlorinated diphenyl. The thermoplastic adhesive layer may comprise a maleic modified or maleate resin, acrylic resin, vinyl resin, polyvinyl methyl ether, or a modified ethyl cellulose lacquer residue, with a plasticizer such as chlorinated diphenyl or ester gum, e.g. glyceryl, methyl or ethyl esters of rosin acids. Transferring designs. The transfer is applied to ceramic ware at 300‹-500‹F., thus obviating the need for cooling the ware after forming, with the thermoplastic adhesive layer against the ware. The release coating melts and releases the backing and barrier layer, leaving the clear film, design layer and adhesive layer as a unit. During firing, the clear layer, the organic components of the design, and the adhesive are completely consumed.
