Coal is fed through pipe 7 and down central pipe 8 to furnace 3 of boiler 2 and its fall down pipe 8 is retarded by air. The air is introduced at 11 into jacket 10 and its path is guided by spiral 14 fixed between tubes 8 and 10 so that it enters pipe 8 through vertical slot 9 to blow the descending fuel against the inner surface of tube 8 to retard it as it falls. Excess air emerges at 12 to blow the fuel into furnace 3.
