Abstract
Silicon-containing (2.75-3.5%) electrical steel is treated by first taking carbon on to solution at 1450-1750 DEG F., as by finishing hot rolling in that range, and then quenching rapidly to below 1000 DEG C. The steel is then held in the range 600-900 DEG F. to allow lenticular precipitates of carbide to develop, and is then alternately cold-rolled and annealed to final size. The initial carbon content may be 0.01-0.085%, but those steels having carbon content greater than 0.065% must be decarburized to below that level during a first continuous anneal following a cold reduction stage. All steels are then decarburized to below 0.003% during a second continuous anneal after rolling to final size. Decarburization may be effected at 1475 DEG F. in a nitrogen-hydrogen atmosphere having a dewpoint of 70 DEG F.
