Abstract

998,989. Winding webs. L. PRESS, [trading as PRESS & CO.]. Dec. 20, 1962, No. 48116/62. Heading B6B. Web 10 is wound into rolls on formers 9b, the formers being supported at either end in slotted end members 3 carried by a rotatable shaft 2. The rolls are driven during winding by winding rollers 4 disposed between slots 8 in the end members, the rollers 4 being driven through gears 6, 7, Fig. 2 (not shown). When a roll reaches a predetermined diameter a detector, e.g. a mechanical feeler 15, Fig. 1, or photo-electric cell causes rotation of the end members 3 to discharge the completed roll on to a rail 17, a new former to be fed to the next slot 8, and cutting of the web to initiate winding on the new former. The web is cut by a knife 12 while compressed air fed to a nozzle 12c, Fig. 3a (not shown), guides the cut end around the new former 9b, Fig. 1. Alternatively, the web is cut by the new former dropping into slots 8 whilst tilted as seen in Fig. 5 (not shown).
