Abstract

1,020,652. Tape recorders. J. IIDAARD EIRAKU DENKI KABUSHIKI KAISHA. Feb. 8, 1963, No. 5311/63. Heading G5R. A tape recorder comprises a rotatable tap support and a driving member for driving the tape so that it becomes wound on to the tape support, the driving member bearing directly on to the outer peripheral surface of the portion of tape which has been wound on to the support. In Fig. 1 the tape is wound about supports 2 and 5 which are rotatably mounted in a frame 8. The tape is driven from support 5 past erase and record/playback heads 18 and 19 to support 2 by a capstan 15 which bears on the tape already wound on the support 2. Pads 10 and 12 carried by springs 9 and 11 rotatably mounted on the frame 8 bear on the tape to assist proper winding and unwinding. The supports 2 and 5 are rotatably mounted on spindles 13 and 14 mounted on a base-plate (not shown) slidable towards and away from the capstan 15 and spring-biased towards the capstan. The frame 8 is removable as a unit from the apparatus and may be inverted to perform a second track recording or playback. A re-winding capstan 21 is movable along a groove 22 to contact the tape wound on support 5 and may be driven manually or electrically. A modified apparatus for recording on two tracks without inverting the frame 8, Fig. 4 (not shown), includes an erase head on each side of a double track record/ playback head, and is provided with a second capstan similar to capstan 15 but rotating in the opposite direction and arranged near the support 5 so that the tape can be driven in either direction.
