Abstract

997,836. Ball joints. RUBBER PLASTICS Ltd. June 27, 1963 [June 7, 1962], No. 22057/ 62. Heading E2F. In a ball joint the diameter of the mouth of the socket is smaller than the diameter of the ball and the diameter of the spherical seating in the socket, prior to the insertion of the ball, is larger than the diameter of the mouth but smaller than the diameter of the ball so that the socket, which is made in one piece from elastic material, yields to permit the insertion of the ball and thereafter grips the ball with a friction loading. The socket is preferably made from polyurethane, and may be moulded onto a rod 6, Fig. 2, so as to be rotatable but not axially movable thereon. Alternatively the socket may be formed with an apertured shank adapted to receive the threaded end of a rod. In a further embodiment, Fig. 4, the socket 19 is moulded in situ in the aperture 29 of a link 20 using mould members 21, 22 and a core piece 28 formed as a ball stud. A socket such as 19 may be formed separately and inserted subsequently into an aperture 29 in a link, withdrawal being prevented by flanges 24, 26 or by securing the socket to the link with a suitable bonding agent e.g. polyisocyanate. The friction between the ball and the socket can be controlled and abrasion resistance increased by dispersing dry lubricants such as molybdenum disulphide and/or liquid lubricants such as silicone oil in the polyurethane.
