Abstract

997,738. Jet propulsion plant. A. P. PEDRICK. Sept. 24, 1963 [March 20, 1963], No. 10966/63. Heading F1J. [Also in Divisions B7, and G6] A surface or submersible vessel is propelled by jets of steam discharged from motors 8 or 8<SP>1</SP> which is generated from ambient water by a nuclear reactor carried by the vessel. The motors 8 are disposed at the sides of the vessel, or at the stern as shown chain-dotted, so as to be movable about vertical or horizontal axes. Each motor 8 or 8<SP>1</SP> comprises a plurality of evaporator coils 24, 25 through which fluid is circulated from the heat exchangers 3, of the reactor 1 by pumps 6 and motors 7, to convert water entering through the non-return valves 27, 28 into steam to be discharged as a jet at the outlet 33. A plurality of motors may be arranged in staggered pairs. When the invention is applied to a submersible vessel the hull may be formed as a single motor, the evaporator coils being disposed around the main hull inside a water jacket. Specification 997,737 is referred to.
