Abstract

997,576. Cathode-ray tubes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Sept. 27, 1962 [Sept. 29, 1961], No. 36730/62. Heading H1D. In a flat cathode-ray tube the vertical scanning deflection is obtained by applying a fixed positive potential at 34 to one end of a resistive coating 24 or alternatively of an array of wires interconnected by resistors, and a varying voltage 46 at 36 to a conductive coating 26. A voltage gradient set up along the resistive coating 24 produces a varying deflection field between the coating 24 and the metallic coating 20 on the phosphor screen 18, and a deflection field is also produced between the conductive coating 26 and the coating 21 which may be an extension of the coating 20. The shape of the coating 21 is preferably parabolic but the envelope could be L-shaped in this region. Conductive coating 30 and portions 23, 25 of coatings 21, 26 form a lens system. The resistive coating 24 may be of chromic oxide. A resistive coating 22 at the top of the tube may be dispensed with and coatings 24, 26 need not lie in a plane. The horizontal deflection system is magnetic and includes shaped collimating polepieces 12 similar to those described in Specification 997,575.
