A process for the production of etchable metal printing plates or cylinders comprises forming a plate from a casting and mechanically compacting the surface zone thereof. In a first example a centrifugally cast zinc tube, e.g. 600 mm. long by 160 mm. diameter, is turned to size and the outer surface thereof compacted to a depth of 1 to 4 mm. by traversing a spherically ground smoothing roller at a pressure of 25 kg./mm.<SP>2</SP> along its length or by peening or drawing. Alternatively a 2 mm. thick zinc layer is cast about an iron core tube, compacted by peening and ground. The surface of a 5 mm. thick cast plate is similarly peened using 1 mm. diameter balls and an air blast pressure of 7 kg./mm.<SP>2</SP> at a distance of 50 mm. from the plate. The metal used is preferably zinc or alloys thereof, zinc having a 99.99% purity or an alloy thereof containing up to 0.1% aluminium and/or up to 0À05% magnesium. The compacted surface is subsequently etched by the one-stage etching process to produce continuous printing blocks or may be cut into segments for attachment to rotary printing cylinders. The depth of the compacted surface is equal to or less than. the etching depth.
