Abstract

In a process of casting metal ingots of uniform thickness, molten steel is poured into a mould and allowed to cool for a predetermined period, determined by the formula t= 1/4b<SP>2</SP>q<SP>2</SP> (2bX 0 -X 0 <SP>2</SP>)<SP>2</SP> where t is the time in minutes, b is the radius in millimetres, q is a constant of solidification, and X 0 is the desired thickness, to form a solid layer on the inside surface of the mould, then the remaining still molten steel is poured off and the ingot further cooled. The process is applied to producing a cupshaped member 7<SP>1</SP> by inverting a mould 9 to pour off excess molten steel, and is also applied to producing a hollow spherical shape (Figs. 4a-4c, not shown), or an indented plate (Figs. 5a, 5b, not shown), produced in a tiltable box-shaped mould. The cup-shaped member 7<SP>1</SP> or a tubular-shaped member may be produced in a mould comprising a central core part (5<SP>1</SP>) (Figs. 6a, 6b, not shown), and a sand lined heat insulated outer wall (11). The cup-shaped or tubular-shaped member may have inside and outside surfaces cut or forged to shape to be shrink fitted on to a roll body (17) (Figs. 8a-8f, not shown), to form a sleeve roll, the member alternatively may be cut into rings that are fitted individually on to the roll body (17) to form a stepped sleeve roll (Fig. 8f). In another process the member may be cut into rings that are subsequently cut and forged into the shape of flanges (Figs. 9a, 9b, not shown).
