Abstract

994,871. Watches. S. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND) Ltd. Sept. 19,1961 [Sept. 19,1960], No.32175/60, Heading G3T. A stop watch of the kind in which three successive depressions and releases of a control button 29 step-on a cam device in the form of a turreted ratchet wheel 26, so that (a) the first step actuates a follower 22 on a lever 20 to carry a resilient stop pin 19 on the lever, which pin is initially in contact with the balance at a position A, along with the balance to start it before moving clear of it to a position B, whereby the seconds hand is started; (b) the second step actuates the follower so that it moves the stop pin from position B back into contact with the balance at position A to arrest it along with the seconds hand; and (c) the third step (by means not shown) releases the seconds hand for return to zero by a spring, is characterized by guard means 17 which prevents the pin 19 from re-engaging the balance until step (b) is substantially ended. The invention avoids the possibility of fictitious low readings being obtained owing to an arrest of the balance by a partial depression only if the button 29 during a timing operation. As shown, the guard 17 is constituted by an upstanding rib on an arm 16 carried from a bridge 13 which supports the balance arbor. A spring biased detent 35 locates the turreted ratchet wheel 26 in the initial position, this detent being moved out of the space between the turret cam projections 25 to engage the projectors frictionally. Reverse movement of the ratchet is prevented by a pawl 31.
