Abstract

1405102 Stop-watches SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd 18 Aug 1972 [20 Aug 1971] 39088/71 Heading G3T A start-stop mechanism of a stop watch comprises a lever 26 pivoted at 27 and having notches 24, 25 which are alternately engaged by end portions 22, 23 of a plunger 16 when button 13 is repeatedly depressed. A spring 17 biases the plunger and button outwardly relative to a fixed sleeve 15. After engagement of an end portion 22 or 23 in a corresponding notch, the plunger is tilted sideways as the lever 26 pivots to the other of its two positions. A snap action is given by an overcentre toggle mechanism comprising a tension spring 37 attached to a fixed pin 38 and a pin 29 on the lever 26. The pin 29 also engages a slot in a brake lever 30 which is thereby rocked about its pivot 31. In the STOP position shown, a rod 32 fixed to the lever 30 engages a brake drum 33 on the seconds hand shaft, and a pin 34 on the lever arrests balance 35. Depression of button 13 will rock the lever 30 clockwise to start the watch, bringing a flange 36 on the lever into a position to prevent inward movement of a hands resetting button 12.
