Abstract

993, 563. Web coating apparatus. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO. Nov. 20, 1961 [Dec. 5, 1960], No. 41506/61. Heading D1L. Apparatus for supplying a uniform film of adhesive to a moving strip comprises a first roller rotating on a fixed axis, a second roller yieldably urged against the first roller, a pair of spaced rings on one of the rollers to provide a predetermined minimum spacing between the rollers in the region between the rings, one of the rollers being provided with an end flange which sealably co-operates with the other roller, means for feeding adhesive to the bight between the rollers which adhesive is contained by said end flange and which flows axially along the rollers and away from said end flange to spill over one of said rings. In the embodiment shown web 2 is arranged to travel in contact with driven roller 8 from which it picks up adhesive. Spring pressed against roller 8 in a second roller 11 and adhesive is supplied via pipe 32 and valve 34 to the nip between the two rollers. Roller 11 is provided with flanges 20, 22 which are a close fit with roller 8 so as to form a trough for the adhesive. It may also be provided with raised portions or hands 24, 26 to control the thickness of the adhesive layer. Roller 8 is provided at one end with a groove 30 and surplus adhesive is removed through this groove. Spring loaded scrapers 44, 52 assist in the removal of the adhesive which is returned via pipe 50 to the main reservoir. In a second embodiment roller 11 is flanged at one end only, surplus adhesive being allowed to spill over at the non-flanged end where it is removed by a scraper and returned to the reservoir.
