Abstract

795,470. Coating webs. BRITISH CELLOPHANE, Ltd. Feb. 1, 1956 [Feb. 4, 1955], No. 3334/55. Addition to 663,645. Drawings to Specification. Class 140. An improvement in or modification of the process described in the parent Specification in which the nip formed by the film surfaces is supported by two parallel rollers of which at least one of the rollers is a tyred roller, i.e. a roller a short axial length, not less than “ inch, at each end of which is formed to a diameter slightly greater than the barrel diameter. The tyres may be formed integral with the barrel, e.g. by forming the tyres first on a cylindrical grinder and then, without moving the assembly, grinding the barrel. They may also be formed of thin bands of e.g. brass or stainless steel rigidly secured, for example by an epoxy resin adhesive, to the ends of the roller or they may constitute rings of hard material such as steel secured concentrically by screws at each end of the roller. The rollers may be held in contact by pressure, e.g. spring pressure, applied to any convenient part of the roller, e.g. to the tyre of the tyred roller and to the journal of the plain roller. Guards may enclose the tyred portions of the rollers and dust may be excluded by rubber seals. Wiping pads or jets of compressed gas may remove any dust which penetrates the guards. The rollers may be driven so that the peripheral speeds of both barrels or so that the peripheral speeds of one barrel and of the tyre of the other roller correspond to the speed of travel of the film or one roller may be driven and the other rotated by the turning moment transmitted through the tyre or both rollers may be rotated by the turning moment exerted by the film.
