Abstract

770,375. Roller bearings. ROESCH, A., [trading as WAGNER, F., [Firm of]]. April 19, 1955 [July 30, 1954], No. 11217/55. Class 12 (1). In a bearing for high speed spindles, particularly grinding spindles, the spindle is mounted at each bearing point between at least three rollers of a diameter considerably larger than that of the spindle and the trunnions of the rollers are supported in annular elements which have small projections extending radially outwards to support the elements within the housing of the bearing. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 3, a spindle 36 is rotatably mounted between three sets of rollers 4, 5, 6 integral with shafts 7, 8, 9 which are supported at opposite ends on bearings 38. The bearings are supported by annular elements 10, 11, each element having three ears 13 with bores 12 therein to accommodate the bearings 38. The elements are made of highly resilient steel and are provided with projections 14 which engage the inner surface of the housing so that the rollers 4, 5, 6 when assembled exert pressure on the spindle 36. A key. 15 engages a groove in the housing and a corresponding groove in one of the projections 14 of each element to prevent the elements from turning. The element 10 at one end is pressed up against an end cover 2 and at the other end a plate spring 19 and a transparent disc 20 are interposed between the element 11 and an end cover ' 3 so that the rollers 4, 5, 6 are resiliently urged towards the left. The roller shafts have pulleys 33, which may be driven by a single belt. In the construction shown in Fig. 5, the spindle 136 carries a turbine wheel 137 driven by compressed air, and is rotatably mounted between two sets of bearing rollers 107. Each roller is mounted on trunnions 114 secured in the annular elements 110, 111. The rollers are held in place against the elements by shoulders 116, 117, the shoulder 116 being formed on a ring 120 slidable on the spindle 136 and pressed by one or two springs 122, and the shoulder 117 being formed, on the spindle 136. In a further construction, similar bearing arrangements are provided for a spindle which forms the central shaft of a squirrel-cage electric motor.
