Abstract

777,613. Coating paper webs. MEAD CORPORATION. Dec. 9, 1954 [Dec. 21, 1953], No. 35657/54. Classes 96 and 140. [Also in Group XIII] In a method of coating paper for printing in which a smooth surface is formed on a layer of fluent coating composition applied to the paper by smoothing the surface of the applied coating With a low-temperature smoothing member, a film of release fluid applied to the surface of the smoothing member prior to contact between the surface of the smoothing member and the coating inhibits wetting of the surface by the coating and adhesion thereto, thereafter the paper and applied coating are separated from the member and the coating on the paper is dried. The process is substantially the same as that described in Specification 676,867, with the addition of a trough 51 with rollers 52, 53 for providing a film of liquid on the refrigerated roller 25. The feed roller 52 which dips into the trough is mounted in bearings 55 on a support 67 and adjusted by a screw 65 to abut the roller 53. The liquid feeding apparatus is adjusted bodily by a screw 60 secured to a main support 63 relatively to the applying roller 25. The liquid may comprise glycol, water and alcohol. Alternatively it may comprise an eutectic mixture of glycol and water or diethylene glycols, hydrocarbons, ether, higher alcohols or liquid organic salts.
