Abstract

<PICT:0894017/III/1> A machine for coating paper and like separate sheets S includes an applying roller 3 working to, and rotating in a reverse surface direction to, a backing cylinder 4; grippers 6 on the cylinder, arranged to carry the sheets past the roller 3 and around and in contact with the cylinder 4 for a considerable distance; a feed roller 1 arranged to feed varnish to the roller 3 and to be rotated in the same surface direction as the latter; and an evener roller 7 located above the applying roller 3 in such a position as to create a small reservoir 8 of varnish across and in the entrance to the nip between the two rollers, the evener roller 7 being driven in the same surface direction and with the same surface speed as the applying roller 3.
