Abstract

<PICT:0852489/III/1> Paper or the like separate sheets are coated with varnish or the like by passing them between a backing cylinder 4 and an applying roller 3 with the latter rotating in a reverse surface direction to that of the backing cylinder. The front edges of the sheets are gripped by cam-operated grippers 6. The applying roller 3 is fed by a feed roller 1 which rotates in a trough 2 provided with a baffle plate 5, forming a shallow bath in which the roller dips; surplus varnish flows over the edge 5b back to the main supply in the trough 2.
