Abstract

<PICT:0677281/III/1> A pencil lead is coated before grease impregnation over part of its surface by a substantially grease impervious film that is compatible with the adhesive by which the lead is later bonded to its sheath, thus affording anchorage for the adhesive bonding of the lead with its sheath of wood or the like. Unimpregnated leads 17 are fed from a hopper 20 by a feed roller 21 to a space between a film applying roller 16 and a spring-pressed backing roller 18. The surface of the printing roller 16 may be plain, so that a film is applied which leaves only the ends of the lead exposed for admission of grease. The liquid 11 is fed from a tank 10 by a pick-up roller 12 engaged by a doctor roller which removes excess liquid. The roller 12 is engaged by a transfer roller 15 in engagement with the printing roller 16. After passage between the rollers 16 and 18 the leads drop into a box 23. The liquid used for forming the film may be the same form of glue as is used for bonding the lead to the sheath, such as fish glue, glue made of polyvinyl emulsion, or adhesives of the water emulsion, water solution or solvent type. In the use of water emulsion or water solution types of adhesive a proportion of glue retardant is preferably included in the adhesive.
