Abstract

1,029,822. Strip coating apparatus. ANSETT IRON CO. Ltd. March 11,1963 [March 12,1962], No. 9346/62. Heading D1L. [Also in Division B2] A method for the continuous coating of a metal strip with a thermosetting plastics material comprises passing the strip upwardly and once only through the free surface of a bath of liquid thermosetting plastics coating composition and heating the strip before and/or after its passage through the bath to effect curing of the plastics material around the strip. In the arrangement shown a coil 1 of steel strip 2 is mounted on spindle 3 and the free end is threaded between rollers 4 and then through an opening in bottom plate 10 of container 5 containing plastic coating composition 6. The strip then passes through a heating zone 7 and is coiled on drum 9. The opening in bottom plate 10 is closed by a pair of compressible pads 11 e.g. of felt, urged into contact with the strip by a pair of spring steel plates 12 supported on spaced rods 13 and adjustable by screws 14. The opening is preferably shaped to conform to the cross-section of the strip to be coated. The container 5 may be provided with a funnel for supplying coating composition to the container and for monitoring the level of the composition in the container. The thickness of coating may be adjusted by varying the speed of the strip, the viscosity of the composition or by preheating the strip or by mechanical means such as rollers or scrapers. The speed of the strip is also related to the curing requirements of the coating and the coated strip may be passed through patterning or embossing rollers before it is fully cured. The end of one coil may be welded to the beginning of the next to obtain a continuous feed of strip through the apparatus or in the case of rigid strips then may be fed individually through the apparatus.
