Abstract

<PICT:0744884/III/1> A method of applying adhesive to a surface comprises bringing the end portion of a substantially solid rope of thermoplastic adhesive material into contact with the surface of a rotatable roll simultaneously heating to liquefy that portion and rotating the roll to carry a desired portion of the liquefied adhesive to that surface. Apparatus to carry the method into effect comprises a rotatable roller 5 supported on a shaft 4 between side plates for applying adhesive to a surface B. Rope adhesive is supplied to the roller 5 between rollers 31, 32 to a bore 8 and opening 12 in a holder 7 which is urged by a spring 13 against the roller 5. The adhesive is heated by electrical cartridges 26 in a cover plate 15. The holder 7 is retained by leaf springs 17, 18 screwed to the cover plate and a cross-bar 20. The rollers 31, 32 are mounted between side brackets and rotate in apertures in a tube 30 through which the rope of adhesive passes. A driven shaft 42 carries sprockets which drive the roller 5 and roller 32 through suitable chains and sprockets. The side brackets 28 (one of which is shown) are notched at 37 for mounting on a box forming machine F. The surface of the roller 5 may be grooved and a lip 23 of the holder 7 may be apertured to limit the amount of adhesive applied. The end P of the holder 7 is made of heat insulating material. The cover 15 extends to form a hood 21 over the roller and is grooved to allow movement of the roller. Specification 730,683 [Group XVII] is referred to.
