Abstract

660,261. Stencilling-apparatus. STRIKER, M. S. Feb. 24, 1948 [March 13, 1944], No. 5414/48. Class 100 (ii). [Also in Group XV] A method of screen-printing fabric includes the step of securing the fabric to a printing table by means of a slightly sticky adhesive coating applied to the table and which remains thereon in a permanently slightly sticky condition after the fabric has been printed and removed. An adhesive-applying apparatus comprises rollers 14, 15 resting on a long printing table, a roll 20 of fabric to be printed, a container 21 for adhesive, and an electric motor 27 to drive the roller 14. The container 21 has an outlet 23 for the adhesive, extending the width of the Lable, and a distributing blade 25. The motor is connected to electric supply sails 34 alongside the table by contacts 33. Rollers 36, 37 engage a rail 40 secured to the table, to guide the apparatus laterally as it moves over the table. The roll 20 is also laterally slidable, within limits. In operation, the apparatus starts at the left hand end of the table, which is 60-90 feet long. Fabric is unwound from the roll and the end introduced between the roller 15 and the table. The motor circuit is established, the outlet 23 opened, and the apparatus moves along the table, applying a layer of adhesive and thereon a layer of fabric. At the end of the run, the circuit is broken, the outlet 23 closed, manually or automatically, and the apparatus stopped. Unless the whole length of the fabric on the roll 20 has been used, the length on the table is then severed, and printing takes place before or after the apparatus is returned manually or by the motor to the left end of the table. On subsequent runs, the outlet 23 is closed, since no further adhesive is required. To ensure that the apparatus remains in contact with the rail 40, the roller 37 may be located nearer the longitudinal centre of the apparatus than the roller 36, or the axes of the rollers 14, 15 may be slightly out of parallel. The adhesive is non-aqueous and may be wax or waxlike, in which case heating means are combined with the container 21.
