Abstract

894,091. Fabrics composed of adhesivelyunited threads; coating webs. RABONE & SONS Ltd., JOHN. Nov. 18, 1960 [Dec. 15, 1959], No. 42519/59. Class 140. A method of producing measuring-tapes comprises the steps of aligning in parallel and substantially coplanar relationship a plurality of glass fibre threads and applying to the group of threads a continuous coating of plastic enclosing the threads to form the tape. As shown, Figs. 1 and 2, glass fibre threads are fed from spools 5 through open grid-like guide 6, then through guide 7 comprising a number of horizontal parallel bars and guide 8 having verticallyextending teeth whence they emerge in parallel co-planar relationship as a tape of single thread vertical thickness and then pass through the horizontally-extending gap of a gate 9, over and under guide-rods 10, through a second gate 12 and thence along ramp 16 into the mouth at the lower end of bath 13, which is of upwardly divergent funnel-like configuration and maintained substantially full of polyvinyl chloride paste from delivery tank 14, via fuel pipe 15 ; surplus paste drains down ramp 16 into vessel 11. From bath 13 the coated threads pass up ramp 16, through die 17, thence through horizontally adjustable gates 18 and 19, over blade 20, surplus paste being collected in drip-tray 22, and thence over blade 23 and on to horizontal bars 24 mounted between a pair of wheel discs 25. These latter are rotatable within an oven 26 wherein the tape is heated by infra-red heaters 27 located on each side of the tape, so as to cure the P.V.C. Thence the tape is led between pressure rolls 28, over guides 29 and is wound up on roll 30. A further coating of polyvinyl chloride is then applied to the tape as shown in Fig. 4, where tape from spool 30 is fed through guide apertures 31, over roller 32 and beneath guide-bar 33 immersed in bath 34 of polyvinyl chloride paste. Thence the tape passes between two pairs of felt-covered rollers 35 and 38 and into oven 39 wherein it passes over guides 40 and curing of the second coating of polyvinyl chloride is effected. The tape then passes between pressure-rolls 41 and on to windup roll 42.
