In a method of zone-melting a rod of silicon by induction heating, the voltage across the heating coil 4 is maintained constant and an additional coil 10 is employed at the solidifying interface, the voltage across which is employed to control the diameter of said interface. The voltage across the heating coil may be maintained constant by control of the high-frequency generator or of the distance between the ends of the rod. The diameter of the liquid/solid interface may be controlled by control of the frequency of the current supplied to the heating coil or of the distance between the two ends of the rod. The lower rod (on the resolidification side) may be rotated. Operation may be in vacuo, hydrogen, or argon.
