Abstract

993,172. Sealing means for lances etc.; metallurgical converters. W. HUFNAGL. Aug. 9, 1962 [Aug. 9, 1961], No. 30570/62. Heading F4B. A device for blowing media such as gases, liquids or granular solids into molten metals incorporates a tongue and groove sealing element at a connection, the edges of the tongue being rounded to a radius r smaller than the cross section radius R of the groove. A nozzle body 1 with a thickened underpart 2 is set into the bottom plate 3 of a converter. An intermediate member 4 has a groove 7 and a tongue 6a co-operating respectively with a tongue 6 and a groove 7a. Fig. 3 shows a water-cooled lance for blowing oxygen into a steel bath which incorporates the tongue and groove in annular form and in which an apertured bar or plate 50 is held against the nozzle by screws 52. Further embodiments, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), have a Venturi nozzle and an inclined nozzle respectively. Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown) illustrate nozzles for imparting rotary motion to the media. A nozzle in a converter bottom 18, Fig. 8, has the tongue 6d and groove 7d in a flange 22 attached to one end of the nozzle body 19 whilst the other end is bent at 20. In another converter bottom, Fig. 10 (not shown), the nozzle has a flange incorporating the seal and attached to the converter base plate. Further oxygen lances show a water-cooled lance, Fig. 9 (not shown), in which the central oxygen pipe is sectionalized, and another, Fig. 11 (not shown), in which the oxygen itself enters a cooling jacket.
