Abstract

1401855 Refining metals CREUSOT-LOIRE 3 Aug 1972 [4 Aug 1971] 36309/72 Heading C7D [Also in Division F4] The oxide fumes produced during refining of a metal bath by blowing in an oxidizing gas are reduced or suppressed by blowing through the centre tube of a blast pipe a separate feed of a liquid or of a gas containing droplets in suspension, and blowing the oxidizing gas through a tube surrounding the centre tube. The central feed may be of water under pressure, atomized water in a carrier gas or a reducing liquid such as a fuel oil. The water or oil may have a fluidized solid fuel in suspension; a third tube surrounding that for the oxidizing gas may be used for injecting fuel oil to protect the tip of the blast pipe. The invention may be applied in refining iron or steel.
