Abstract

1453717 Refining steel BRITISH STEEL CORP 16 Aug 1974 [17 Aug 1973] 39003/73 Heading C7D Steel is deoxidized until the oxygen content together with 0À2 times the sulphur content amounts to less than 0À011%, after which there is added one or more rare earth metals or compounds containing them while the steel is agitated. In preferred embodiments the steel contains less than 0À007% oxygen and less than 0À02% sulphur before introduction of the rare earth metals, the addition of which lies between 0À1 and 10 kg for 0À01% of sulphur per ton of steel. Agitation may be electromagnetic, or by gas injection through a lance or porous plug, while the steel may be simultaneously heated by electric arc.
