Abstract

1368881 Treating molten metals ACIERIES REUNIES DE BURBACH-EICH-DUDELANGE S A 3 Feb 1972 [4 Feb 1971] 5197/72 Heading C7D Molten metal such as iron or steel are treated by passing the melt from container 5 to a treatment container 1 by injection of a gas, neutral or reactive into inlet tube 2 from a gas injector 4, the metal returning under gravity to container 5 through outlet tube 3. Treatment additives, or alloying elements may be added from a dosing container 9 or blown in with the gas at the base of tube 2. High melting additives may be fused by passing through a superheated slag on the surface of the metal in the container 1. The level of the metal in container 1 may be raised by passing gas under pressure into the enclosed space of container 5 through pipe 8. Mining may be aided by varying the flow of gas from injector 4, by varying the pressure of gas introduced through pipe 8 or, in use of the apparatus of Fig.1 (not shown) by raising and lowering the containers 1 and 5 relatively to each other. Reference is made to addition of magnesium for production of spheroidal graphite cast iron and to addition of lead or sulphides for producing free-cutting steels.
