Abstract

1403544 Treating molten metals with gases ALLEGHENY LUDLUM INDUSTRIES INC 7 July 1972 [9 July 1971] 31979/72 Heading C7D The gas is injected into the bath as a stream of bubbles having a trajectory giving a residence time sufficient for completion of reaction while preventing contact of the bubbles with the refractory lining of the vessel. In a preferred embodiment the mass flow-rate of the gas is determined from the metallurgical characteristics of the system, and the gas is then injected through at least one orifice where where NRE is the Reynolds number and is not less than 10000, W is the gas mass flow-rate in 1b/sec Á is the gas viscosity in 1b/in-sec- and do is the diameter of the or each orifice, the injection pressure being selected to ensure that the gas will not contact the lining, possibly according to the Formulae where L v is the vertical penetration of the bubble in inches Lh is the horizontal penetration P 0 is the gas pressure in 1b/sq. in # is the angle of inclination of the orifice with respect to the vertical Injection may be through a submerged lance or through the side wall(s) of the vessel and may be horizontally to at least one-third the distance from the orifice to the opposite wall, and vertically to at least one-third the total bath depth.
