A permanent magnet material comprises a sintered mixture of barium and/or strontium ferrite with barium and/or strontium manganite having the formula x(ZO.yFe 2 O 3 ).ZMnO 3 where Z is Ba, Sr or a combination of both, x is from 3 to 14 and y is from 5 to 7. The ferrite and manganite are made in separate sintering processes. The ferrite is formed by mixing barium (or strontium) carbonate with ferric oxide, drying, and sintering between 1900‹ F. and 2300‹ F. for 4 to 6 hours. A similar process is used to form the manganite. A mixture of 94%-98% ferrite with 6%-2% manganite by weight is mixed, ground to a size less than 5 Á, mixed with a consumable binder, moulded under 2000-20,000 p.s.i., or extruded and sintered in an oxidizing atmosphere between 1600‹ F. and 2700‹ F. for ¢ to 6 hours. The formed body is magnetized.
