Abstract

677,418. Magnetic compositions. STEATITE RESEARCH CORPORATION. Jan. 19, 1951 [May 27, 1950], No. 1524/51. Drawings to Specification. Class 38 (ii). A ferromagnetic composition comprises oxides of nickel, zinc, manganese and ferric iron in a ceramic ferrite form and has initial and maximum permeabilities of less than 1000, and more than 3000 respectively, a saturation flux density of more than 3000 gauss, a coercive force of less than 0.3 oersted and a Curie point above 160‹ C. The composition is made by mixing 17-21 per cent of zinc oxide, 9-13 per cent of nickel oxide, 64-68 per cent of ferric oxide and 2-5 per cent of manganese oxide in a ball-mill, heating between 2000‹ and 2800<SP>o</SP> F., again ball-milling, pulverizing with 2-4 per cent of a binder such as gum or flour, and water, and firing first in an oxidizing atmosphere, e.g. air, at about 2200‹ F., and then in a neutral atmosphere, e.g. water-vapour or nitrogen at a lower temperature, e.g. 2000‹ F.
