788,727. Magnetic compositions. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Oct. 4, 1954 [Oct. 7, 1953], No. 28568/54. Drawings to Specification. Class 38 (2). A magnetic ferrite material having a substantially rectangular hysteresis loop comprising oxides of iron, manganese and magnesium in proportions by weight, between 50 and 70 per cent Fe 2 O 3 , 3.1-10 per cent MgO, the balance being MnO 2 , is made by mixing oxides of the metals and heating to between 1150-1450‹ C., preferably between 1250‹ and 1350‹ C. in air or nitrogen. Alternatively compounds which change to oxides during the manufacture, e.g. carbonates and sulphates, may be used. The materials are ground with alcohol in a ball-mill, dried, preheated at 700‹ C. for 1 hour, cooled and reground with alcohol, dried, sieved, granulated after the addition of a binder, pressed at 4 tons/ sq. cm. and then sintered. It is shown that the best results are obtained with materials having the formula (Mn a Mg( 1-a) )Fe 2 O 4' where a is 0.5-1, the optimum conditions being obtained when the formula is where a is 0.5-1 and b is 0.25-0.75.
