Abstract

737,284. Magnetic compositions. STEATITE RESEARCH CORPORATION. Feb. 6, 1953 [Feb. 15, 1952], No. 3462/53. Drawings to Specification. Class 38 (2). A fire.d core body comprises magnetic material having a rectangular hysteresis loop suitable for use as computer and magnetic memory systems is a manganese magnesium ferrite comprising in mol. percentages; an oxide of Mg, 8-62; an oxide of Mn, 4-77; metal sesquioxide, 15-52; at least 84 per cent of the last mentioned being Fe 2 O 3 , the core body containing less than 50 per cent of Fe 2 O 3 and a significant amount, up to 8 mol. per cent, of other metal sesquioxides. Suitable additional sesquioxides are those of Cr, A1, Ti, Ga, V, Co, La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Er and mixtures. Up to 8 mol. per cent of an oxide of a bivalent heavy metal such as zinc or one of a number listed may be added. Other additions may be up to 4 mol. per cent of a non-metallic or light metal fluxlike oxide and up to 5 mol. per cent of magnesium fluoride replacing part of the magnesium oxide. Details of firing temperatures and atmospheres are given.
