Abstract

820,855. Magnetic compositions. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Feb. 8, 1957 [Feb. 14, 1956], No. 4397/57. Drawings to Specification. Class 38 (2). A ferromagnetic ferrite having a rectangular hysteresis loop is made by mixing together 23- 52 mol. per cent of ferric oxide up to 25% of which may be replaced by aluminium and/or chromium oxides, 33-77 mol. per cent of manganese oxide or manganese and magnesium oxides, 0-15 mol. per cent of zinc and/or chromic oxides, and 0.02-0.5% by weight of boron in the form of sodium borate or boric acid, compressing the mixture, heating it at 1150-1350‹ C. in nitrogen containing up to 2% by volume of oxygen, and cooling in pure nitrogen. Curves are given showing how the coercive force, magnetic induction, and coefficient of rectangularity vary with change of boron content from 0.02 to 0.20%, for manganese ferrite comprising MnO and Fe 2 O 3 in equal molecular proportions, to which sodium borate has been added. The ferrite is made by grinding the starting mixture (which may include MnO or Mn 3 O 4 ) in water in a ball mill, and heating at 1230‹ C. for 4 hours in nitrogen containing 1% by volume of oxygen, and cooling in pure nitrogen. Hysteresis curves and other information of their magnetic properties are given for the material containing no and 0.04% by weight of boron. A material incorporating oxides in the following molecular percentages: Fe 2 O 3 , 46.8%; MnO, 32.8%; ZnO, 6.9%; MgO, 13.5% was produced by a similar process except that the sintering temperature was 1275‹ C. Characteristics are quoted of the material with no boron and with additions of sodium borate and boric acid. Specification 820,853 is referred to.
