735,375. Magnetic compositions. STEATITE RESEARCH CORPORATION. Feb. 5, 1953 [Feb. 7, 1952], No. 3300/53. Drawings to Specification. Class 38 (2). A magnetic material having a substantially rectangular hystpresis loop suitable for use in computer and magnetic memory systems is a manganese, magnesium ferrite comprising by weight MgO 3-10 per cent, MnO 15-71 per cent, FeO 3 25-75 per cent with the addition of 0-8 per cent by weight of the oxide of heavy metal. The weight of heavy metal oxide must not exceed the amount of MgO, and the Fe 2 O 3 must not exceed 50 mol. per cent of the total. A list of elements regarded as heavy metals is given, but zinc and cadmium are specified as particularly suitable. In these materials, response times, the sharpness of the corners of the hysteresis loops, and high values of dB/dH are sacrificed to some extent for improvement in saturation flux density, retentivity, and initial and maximum permeability. The invention is described with reference to triaxial diagrams, Figs. 2, 3 (not shown), and examples using different proporportions of oxide are given, with values of their magnetic properties.
