760,035. Magnetic compositions. STEATITE RESEARCH CORPORATION. Jan. 5, 1954 [Jan. 21, 1953], No. 279/54. Addition to 677,692. Drawings to Specification. Class 38 (2). A ferrite core suitable for computers having a substantially rectangular hysteresis loop with a high Br/B8 ratio, sharp corners and a fast switching time is made by the method which forms the invention of the parent Specification, from a mixture of ferric oxide, magnanese dioxide, magnesium oxide up to 5 per cent by weight of a second bivalent heavy metal oxide such as zinc, copper or nickel oxides and up to 4 per cent by weight of a non-metallic or light metal oxide such as silica or aluminium, titanium or calcium oxides. Suitable proportions of starting materials are those used in the invention of Specification 697,219. To make a core of magnesium manganese ferrite, powdered oxides mixed with water and an organic binder, e.g. flour or gum are compressed and fixed in air at 2350‹ to 2400‹ F. The cores are then heated at 2100‹ F. in a muffle furnace or a tunnel kiln in an atmosphere of water vapour or neutral gas such as helium, argon or carbon dioxide. The reheating may be repeated several times. Properties of the cores whose manufacture is described are tabulated.
