Abstract
Ferrites of the formula x(Mn).y(Fe2O4) and x(Mn.M).y(Fe2O4), where M is a bivalent metal, especially zinc, are prepared by mixing substantially pure (99.9%) manganese metal powder with at least part of the iron oxide, and with or without the oxide of M, calcining the mixture in an atmosphere containing sufficient oxygen to oxidize the metal, at 1000 DEG -2400 DEG F., and at a firing cycle capable of completely oxidizing the metal, grinding the calcine, adding any remaining oxides of iron or M, forming into a shaped body, such as a transformer core, for example by pressing or extrusion, preferably with an organic binder, and firing in a protective atmosphere, such as nitrogen, carbon dioxide, or water vapour, for example at about 2,400 DEG F.
