Abstract

1523910 Manganese zinc ferrous ferrites PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 29 Oct 1975 [12 Nov 1974] 44625/75 Heading C1J A manganese-zinc-ferrous ferrite body (e.g. a core for a magnetic head) having a reduced porosity of less than 1% is manufactured by preparing a mixture containing oxides of iron, manganese and zinc and/or compounds which form these oxides on heating; prefiring the mixture, grinding the prefired material, compressing the ground material, heating the compressed material to the sintering temperature and sintering the compressed material wherein the material to be heated and sintered is given a ferrous content which differs by not more than 20% from the ferrous content of the stoichiometric composition (ratio of cations to anions is 3:4) during one of the steps preceding the step of heating the compressed material to the sintering temperature. The sintering temperature is between 1200‹ C. and 1300‹ C. except in the case where the mixture contains the required ferrous ion in the form of Fe 3 O 4 when the sintering temperature is between 1050‹ C. and 1300‹ C. The ferrous content may also be given during the prefiring step by use of an oxygen containing atmosphere, the partial oxygen pressure of which corresponds to the equilibrium oxygen pressure of the material having the stoichiometric spinel composition of the temperature used.
