Abstract

740,894. Magnetic compositions. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. July 15, 1952 [July 18, 1951], No. 17855/52. Class 38 (2). A magnetic material suitable for loading coil cores, where it is desirable that the permeability Á remains constant with a varying magnetic field strength H, comprises spinel type ferrite crystals, having a value of tan # less than 0.06 at 2 kc./sec., a pore volume greater than 10 per cent, initial permeability Á 0 greater than 500 and a ratio of maximum permeability Ámax to Á 0 less than 1.2, the permeability being for the material when having an apparent density greater than 0.96 of the X-ray density. Such mixed ferrite material is made by preparing a mixture of oxides or materials which form oxides on heating, pre-sintering between 700‹ and 1000‹ C., and then sintering at least twice at a temperature above 1100‹ C., preferably above 1200‹ C. Nickel zinc ferrite may be prepared by presintering at 700‹ C. a mixture obtained by precipitation from a solution of metal compounds, sintering in air or oxygen at 1250‹ C. rings or plates pressed therefrom, crushing and grinding the sintered bodies, and resintering a further ring pressed from the material. The ferrite material should contain at least 28 mol per cent of nickel ferrite and not more than 72 mol. per cent of zinc ferrite.
