Abstract
In recovering tar phenols and organic bases from coal-tar distillates containing them, the distillate is first diluted with a quantity of the same or a similar distillate from which tar phenols and organic bases have been removed, whereafter the bases are washed out with a mineral acid and finally the tar phenols are removed. In the first step the distillate is preferably mixed with such a proportion of phenol-and base-free distillate as to yield a mixture containing 2-15% of tar phenols. The extraction of bases from the mixture is carried out in a number of stages or in counterflow, suitably with aqueous sulphuric acid of 2-20% concentration, and the bases may then be purified by washing with a coal-tar distillate from which bases and tar phenols have been removed. The final removal of tar phenols from the original distillate may be effected with caustic alkali or by extraction with aqueous methanol. Examples are given.
