As-m-xylidine is obtained from the crude xylidine mixture obtained by the nitration of xylene, and reduction, by dissolving the mixture in an anhydrous solvent, and passing in dry hydrogen chloride. Mixtures of solvents may be used. According to examples the crude mixture is treated with hydrogen chloride in benzene, benzine, and ether.
