In an electric steam iron of the type having in the sole plate 1 a steam generating chamber 4 communicating with a steam collecting chamber 5, the two chambers are closeably by a common cover plate 8 held in place by a further plate 9 which provides part of passageways linking the collecting chamber 5 to the ironing surface. In Fig. 1, item 7 is an inlet drip valve and in Fig. 2, item 21 is a water baffle device.
