Abstract

1,022,697. Steam irons. MORPHYRICHARDS (CRAY) Ltd. Nov. 13, 1964 [Nov. 13, 1963], No. 44726/63. Heading D1A. [Also in Division A4] In a steam iron, a lodgement is provided having a removable or openable wall 9 through which is inserted a substance 5 capable of reducing the hardness of the water which passes therethrough to the iron reservoir. An ion-exchange resin may be used and preferably it changes colour as its efficiency diminishes. As shown, a water passage 11 in the iron grip receives the substance 5 in a transparent container 10 e.g. a plastic cylinder with perforated or open ends or a capsule. The upper half 9 of the grip is detachable so that the container 10 may be removed. A valve in pillar 3 may prevent water from running back from the reservoir. In a modification, the arrangement is placed in one pillar of the handle. A similar arrangement may be provided in the handle of an electric kettle.
