[Also in Division B8] Draft force is applied to a rope 1 by pairs of grippers 19, 19<SP>1</SP> attached to links 11, 12 of an endless chain (see Division B8). The grippers 19, 19<SP>1</SP> are mounted on arms 15, 16 pivoted at 13, 14 to the links 11, 12 and are forced into contact with the rope 1 by the lever action of rollers 17, 18 engaging spring-loaded cam surface 20 and cam surface 20<SP>1</SP>, respectively, as the chair is driven by a ratchet mechanism operated by a reciprocatory hand lever 37 freely pivoted on a shaft 7. Pivoted on the lever 37 is an arcuate rocker member 42 having a pair of oppositely projecting pawls 38, 39 engaging gears 34, 35 respectively. The gear 34 is fast with the shaft 7 which carries a chain-driving sprocket 5. The gear 35 is rotatably mounted on a shaft 36. When the lever 37 moves clockwise (as seen in Fig. 4) gear 34 is driven clockwise by pawl 38, pawl 39 ratcheting over gear 35. When the lever 37 is moved anticlockwise gear 35 is driven anticlockwise by pawl 39 and drives gear 34 clockwise, pawl 38 ratcheting over the gear 34. When the lever 37 is stationary both pawls 38, 39 are engaged and the system is locked. The drive may be made unidirectional by disengaging either pawl 38 or 39 by levers 43, 44 respectively. If both pawls 38, 39 are disengaged the load (not shown) will drop and may be braked by an oil gear pump 45. A gear 47 meshes with a gear 46 keyed to a shaft 52 connected through a one-way drive (not shown) to a sprocket 6 over which the endless chain is entrained. Oil from a reservoir 51 passes through an adjustable flow restricting valve 49, the flow, and hence the braking action, being controlled by a knob 50. A filling plug device 53 includes a spring-loaded plunger to take up variations in the volume of oil due to temperature variations.
