Abstract

Existing devices for transforming alternating linear into unidirection rotation generally comprise at least 4 pinions with spring pawls. The cheaper and simplified device consists of a single ratchet wheel which is actuated in one direction only by means of two pawls, one on either side which push and pull alternately as the lever, to which they are pinned, is raised and lowered. Alternatively the ratchet wheel is replaced by two coupled toothed wheels with the positively of the two output shafts rotating in opposite directions. The mechanism can be used for shipboard winding of ropes and chains.
