874,898. Variable-speed ratchet gearing. BURGESS ENGINEERING (STOKE-ONTRENT) Ltd. Nov. 9, 1959 [Aug. 21, 1968], No. 26855/58. Classes 80 (2) and 80 (3). Driving mechanism for endless band and chain conveyers comprises a driven shaft 12, coupled directly to a drum 11 of a conveyer 10, coarse and fine-toothed ratchet wheels 13, 14 fixed to the shaft 12, cam-operated pawls 15, 24 adapted to engage the teeth of the ratchet wheels 13, 14, and means for varying the throw of at least one of the pawls. The pawls 16, 24 are carried by arms 16, 25, pivotally mounted on the shaft 12, and are connected by rods 17, 26 to pendent rockers 18, 28 carrying rollers 19, 30 which are engaged by cams 20, 31 secured to a driving shaft 21. The end of the connecting rod 26 is attached to the pendent rocker 28 by means of a screw 32 and nut 27, whereby the throw of the pawls 24 may be varied. Both rockers 18, 28 may be provided with throw varying means. The pawls 24 are of progressively increasing length so that the nose of one or the other may always be in operative relationship with a tooth of the ratchet wheel 14. The cams 20, 31 are arranged oppositely out of phase so that as one cam is causing the pawl influenced thereby to induce a forward travel of the conveyer, the pawl influenced by the other cam is on the return stroke, and vice versa.
