Coal-cutting machines.-Means for slewing the cutter member of a coal-cutting machine comprises a rocking lever b oscillated by means of an eccentric a on one of the cutter-driving gears and acting through one or other of two opposed pawl and ratchet mechanisms d, f and e, g, and a slipping clutch m to drive a shaft o and suitable transmission mechanism. For reversing and varying speed, the pawls are controlled by a plate h connected through rods n to handles i arranged one on each side of the machine. Cam or lever means may be provided which, at the end of a slewing movement, engages one or other of the handles i to cause disconnection of the ratchet gearing. The ends of the rods o are squared &c. to permit the slewing to be effected by hand.
