Abstract

991,347. Moulding processes. FOSECO TRADING CO. April 21, 1964 [April 23, 1963], No. 15958/63. Heading B3F. A method of producing sand cores, moulds &c. of bonded sand comprises preheating the sand, mixing therewith a resinous material, such as a urea or phenol formaldehyde, resin which will set on heating in the presence of an accelerator, and an accelerator such as hydrochloric or phosphoric acid or an aryl-sulphonic acid. The composition thus obtained is shaped by applying it to or into a cool pattern or core box and the resinous material is allowed to set in or on the pattern under the combined action of the accelerator and residual heat of the sand. The process described may be carried out continuously by the drying of wet sand by heating means, the hot sand being used without being allowed to cool down. At sand temperatures of between 50‹ to 150‹ C. it is preferable to mix the sand and resin and then add the accelerator at a later stage. At temperatures below 50‹ C. the resin and accelerator may be both mixed directly with the sand. An example of the process is given.
