Abstract

A process for the high-speed production of foundry cores and moulds comprises: (i) mixing 94 to 99.5 parts (by weight) of foundry sand with 0.5 to 6 parts of a binder, which comprises 5 to 40% of one or more boron oxides and/or acids and a liquid resin component comprising at least 15% furfuryl alcohol monomer and a furfuryl alcohol-formaldehyde resin and/or formaldehyde, the maximum amount of free and combined formaldehyde being 30% and the minimum 2% when 0.5 to 15% of an acid catalyst is included and 12% otherwise, to distribute the binder uniformly on the sand; (ii) applying the mix to a shaped surface heated to 350 DEG to 600 DEG F.; (iii) leaving the mix in contact with the surface long enough to form a self-supporting shape; (iv) separating the shape; and (v) allowing cure to proceed at ambient temperature. Polymers of formaldehyde and/or of furfuryl alcohol may also be included in the binder. The sand and binder should be substantially dry. Examples illustrate the use of various binders according to the invention and include comparative data for conventional binders.
