1441572 Foundry moulds BORDEN (UK) Ltd 20 Aug 1973 [21 Aug 1972] 38954/72 Heading C3N [Also in Division C2] Foundry moulds and cores are produced by coating granules of a refractory material either simultaneously or sequentially in a single batch or in two separate batches with from 0À07 to 5À0% by wt. of a catalyst which comprises a substantially anhydrous mixture of aromatic sulphonic acids which does not crystallize at -5‹ C. and which has been prepared by reacting a mixture of aromatic hydrocarbons with H 2 SO 4 at 40‹ to 160‹ C., and with 0À7 to 5À0% by wt. of a synthetic resin binder, and, when the coating is conducted on separate batches, mixing the two batches for use. Specified synthetic resins are phenol formaldehyde, phenol formaldehyde-furfuryl alcohol, urea formaldehyde-furfuryl alcohol, furfuryl alcoholformaldehyde, polymerized furfuryl alcohol resin or mixtures thereof. The refractory material may be silica, sand, quartz, chromite, zircon, olivine, clay or asbestos.
